What is NICA?

Youth development through bikes

NICA (pronounced NYE-cah) uses mountain bikes as a tool to build strong minds, bodies, character, and community.

We believe bikes are powerful tools to build strength, resilience, and character within a supportive community.

Through local teams, trained coaches, and world-class events, NICA helps young people thrive both on and off the bike—building confidence, leadership, friendships, and making the world a better place

There are no selections and no sidelines—everyone rides and trains together in an inclusive ‘challenge by choice’ supportive team environment.

Off screens, into nature

More and more studies are highlighting the dangers of a screen-based childhood. NICA’s programs eschew virtual for reality: we get kids off screens, outside, active, and connected – to each other and to their own mind, body, and confidence. Plus, our programs provide the unique and undeniable benefits of sunshine, fresh air, and time in nature:

Intentionally inclusive

Where many sports struggle to include every young person, NICA is built to welcome and engage all. Inclusivity isn’t an afterthought—it’s a core value that sits at the heart of everything we do. Guided by leading sports research, our programs give kids age-appropriate, fun, and supportive experiences that build community, confidence, and a lifelong love of riding.

Engaging entire families

From supportive parent volunteers to coaches who ride along with teams, NICA welcomes the entire family to participate in ways that are unrivalled by other youth sports. The result: relationship building, positive culture, and a cycling community that can't be beat.

A place for everyone

NICA’s model rejects the “up or out” approach common in many youth sports. We don’t push kids toward burnout or make them feel they have to chase elite performance to belong. Instead, we meet every rider where they are, listen to their goals, and help them discover the joy of riding—so they build a lifelong love of cycling and staying active.

NICA’s origin

The National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) started in Berkeley, California, USA in 2009. It has since expanded across the United States (and now Australia, with further planned international exploration in the near future). NICA supports a network of over 25,000 young riders and 15,000 adult coaches. The goal? Reimagine youth sports and ensure that all kids have a place to ride, make friends, challenge themselves, and lead a healthy lifestyle – all while discovering a lifelong love of cycling.

NICA’s mission, vision, and core values extend beyond what most people think of when they hear the term “sports” – we do more than build fitness.

Our programs develop student-athletes and coaches with great character, who positively influence their communities and those around them.
